Abstract
Florida Power and Light (FPL), a branch of NextEra Energy Inc, has recently introduced a new device into their systems to help reduce the amount of power outages, called the Automatic Transformer Switch (ATS). The ATS makes sure that electrical power is continuously flowing by using a system that can detect faults. When a power outage occurs, the system identifies temporary faults using the ATS and restores them. If it is not a temporary issue, an employee will have to come out and check the ATS. With the recent impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s challenging for FPL to offer safe, in-person training to their employees. Instead, they are creating more virtual training opportunities. FPL has tasked us with designing a Virtual Reality (VR) training application that can train their employees on the ATS.
Our remote training solution is an iPad application that will teach the employees about all the aspects of the ATS. The application will contain educational tools including videos and documents on safety procedures. It will teach them how to use the ATS and perform maintenance on it. The application will also allow employees to practice what they have learned by simulating the procedures on a 3D model. It would be very similar to interacting directly with an ATS device. The app will take them through all the information they need to know, and quiz them throughout. It will show them any wrong answers, so they know what areas they need to improve in.

Design
The selected design for the project mainly considers the various tools and software necessary to meet the customer needs and requirements while also ensuring a hassle-free development process. It was determined by the customer that the final product must be compatible with an iPad. It was further stated that the iPad application must contain a virtual model of the ATS and at minimum support the following relevant modules for ATS training: Safety, Education, Review, and Assessment. Trivially, the tools selected must be able to generate an iPad application upon completion. More importantly, the final design must inherently provide a user-friendly and interactive experience. Upon quantitative analysis of a variety of concepts, the following design components were adapted:
- Production Method: Unity & Unity Cloud Build
- IDE: JetBrains Rider
- 3D Modeling Software: Autodesk Maya
- Delivery Method: iPad Application
- UI Design: Home/Menu Based
- User Assessments: Multiple Choice & Scenario Based
Given the customer needs and requirements and the tools selected for development, the team decided to include 3 main components in the application, also seen in the main menu design to the right :
- Tutorial: Modules consisting of information, demonstration, and user assessments
- Documentation: Ability to access ATS PDF documents and videos
- Playground: Free interaction with ATS model with ability to request ATS component information

Automatic Transformer Switch
The Automatic Transformer Switch (ATS), is an automated switch that possesses the ability to intelligently self-heal the grid and restore service without the assisstance of a crew, thus ensuring minimal power interruptions and continuous power delivery. Collections of smart switches work together to either avoid potential outages altogether, or isolate the impacts of an outage if it may not be prevented. The ATS is a key component in FPL's quest to be the most reliable utility company in the world.
The AR Training Application will provide an in-depth look into the switch along with the various mechanisms that must be used during temporary and permanent faults. In addition to training, employees will be assessed on their knowledge of normal ATS operation, and procedures pertaining to maintenance and troubleshooting. Specifically, the following procedures are imperative for ATS operation, and therefore constitute as the main training focal points within the application:
- Normal In-Service Operation
- Operation During Permanent Fault
- Operation During Temporary Fault
- Non-Reclose Lever Operation
- Manual Open Procedure
- Manual Close Procedure
- Troubleshooting
