TEAM 313: IOT SMART HOME Automation Monitoring System

Project Abstract
Smart home technology, also known as home automation technology, changed how we live our lives ever since it was invented in 1975. The X10 system was seen as the birth of smart home technology. It was a system that used a home's electrical wiring to control lights, appliances, security systems, pools, and more from a distance. The purpose of smart home technology is to give homeowners the ability to have remote access to monitor and manage household devices and systems. This includes devices such as thermostats, security systems, lighting, and entertainment systems. The purpose of our project is to explore the capabilities of the Splunk platform. Then apply them to a home automation system. The software Splunk is used to organize and display data on an easily readable dashboard.

We created a model home to serve as a demo of our home automation system. Various sensors for lights, temperature, and security are included in the design. They are used to gather information and send it to the processor. The processor then decides if an action such as closing a door needs to be done, using Python scripts. As well as send the data to the Splunk Index. The Splunk platform is run on a laptop using the Linux operating system. Data is read from sensors, processed, and shown to the homeowner through a clear and handy dashboard for them to view and setup actions they would like.

As technology gets smarter, the way we manage and monitor our households should follow. Smart home technology can provide benefits, including increased energy effectiveness, improved security, and convenience. We have ensured that our project results show all the benefits of smart home technology with accuracy and a simple build design.
