SCOPE

Team 1 is required to redesign an outdated stainless steel washer-extractor. Emphasis will be placed on material selection, assembly time and overall cost.

The primary aim of the project is to reduce the assembly time. The current stainless steel tub assembly requires several welds, making the assembly process very tedious. Changing the tub assembly to plastic means fewer welds, if any, hence much lower assembly time. Similarly, cost is a major factor. The manufacturing and tooling costs incurred in changing the plastic should be as economical as possible.

The following is the project plan given to us by Tony Sasso at our first meeting with him. (9/14/00)

Fall Semester

» Model parts in ProE: Do not have to be sheet metal parts, standard is fine. Assemble parts into respective assemblies, then overall assemblies named UM100 and UM202.

» Cost analyze parts to be replaced, assuming only the tub assy for now. Use material cost, I can supply information on our database price when needed. We might want you to try a labor study, to see how much time it takes to actually make this part.

» Research possible plastics and cost for each. Chemicals used in this industry, primarily car washes, is bleach and waxing compounds. To be safe, make sure material behaves as stainless steel with corrosives. Temperatures are from cold to hot water, 40 F to 120 F.

» Create designs that can be interchanged in both models, minimum number of parts and assembly steps, and looks like a machine you would want to buy.

» Present the concept designs to choose one to proceed with to a final design. I'll see if I can get marketing and sales to attend and give input. This presentation will need to show how these designs will be as good or better than current design. Use material cost, labor cost, and tooling costs if possible.

Spring Semester

» Present final design against current design, prototype tooling costs, timeline for prototype testing (including assembly time, etc.)

» Create test procedure and test prototype in lab.

» Present final design with test results for production approval.
