Challenge? The challenge with instrumentating the column was accessability. You try to place a 5mm by 0.5mm thin strip of resin inbeded with an electronic circuit and set it with epoxy in the middle of a long and narrow tube and see how challenging it is. The inner diameter of the column is 3.5 inches and the column itself is 36 inches long.

This is how the challenge was overcome. CLTS temperature sensors were wired and then mounted in epxoy onto the metal pannel shown here. Then the pannel was moved to position the CLTS sensors at predescribed locations inside the column. A pneumatic test plug was then inflated to press the metal pannel with the CLTS sensors to the inside of the column. Laslty, a heater was wraped around the outside of the column to allow the epoxy to cure.
