SENIOR DESIGN
CHASSIS & SUSPENSION
PROJECT
Each year, the Society of Automotive Engineers hosts several engineering competitions. The FSAE Club represents the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering in the annual Formula SAE competition in Detroit. This event requires students to conceptualize, design, and fabricate a small formula style racecar. The SAE has set forth stringent safety requirements, but the remainder of the project is in the hands of the student engineers. The competition challenges the students in a meaningful engineering project as well as the opportunity of working in a dedicated team effort.
Our
objective is to design and build a competitive Formula SAE racing car. We
will primarily focus on the suspension and the chassis of the car. The
chassis must be lightweight and still be very stiff and rigid. The
suspension must comply with all rules set forth by SAE. It must be very safe
to operate and protect the driver in highest regard. The suspension must be
designed so that the car remains in control and is easy to handle at all
times while being driven on the racecourse. Both systems must be very
reliable and still easy to maintain and service in case of failure or
accident. Regards to manufacturability must also be thought of to utilize
lean manufacturing for production purposes.
