Thermal Mechanical Fatigue Testing
In this project a method for testing thermal mechanical fatigue failure was created to test different aluminum samples. In an engine, there are aluminum parts that are subjected to varying engine temperatures which cause high levels of stress on the aluminum. Since aluminum has no fatigue limit, it is possible for these aluminum parts to fail through fatigue caused by low stress levels. By performing a test to analysis the material properties of the failed samples, key factors contributing to failure could be identified. Although many test have been performed in this area, additional information or new testing procedures could be very beneficial for companies specializing in engines such as Cummins.
