Scope of Design Project
Objective
The objective of this project is to design and build a GPS guided autonomous lawnmower. This is an inter-discipline project consisting of two senior electrical engineering teams and one mechanical engineering team.

The lawnmower also uses other inputs to run autonomously. This includes a GPS receiver, sonar sensor, compass and wheel encoders. The team will compete in the 2007 ION AutoMOW is Dayton, Ohio.

Background

This is the third year that a Mechanical Engineering Senior Design team has been given the Autonomous Lawnmower project. The first team laid the foundation for the creation of an independently running lawnmower in 2005. Unfortunately, the team was unsuccessful with integrating the microprocessor with the GPS. Also, with this mower, the vibrations of the cutting blades were so extreme that it was dangerous to operate. Team 2006 was successful in completely eliminating the vibration problems that were experienced by the previous year, however were able to write small programs for the GPS, but were unable to fully integrate it into the system.
