The soft catch serves to recover the specimen after extrusion, without damaging it. It is designed to stop the projectile through coming in contact with various substances. After the specimen comes to a complete stop, it should easily be retrieved from the soft catch device. The casing must be strong enough the there is no risk of the projectile breaking through but the material filling the soft catch must be able to preserve the extruded shape. The soft catch should also preserve the surface structure of the material as much as possible. The ratio of the diameter to the cross section length should be greater than twelve times. Space is limited in the testing area so the length of the soft catch needs to be less than six feet. It also should ensure the safety of those conducting the experiment from the projectile.
