Sabot– Design 2

The second design used the plus sign design with material removed to allow it to secure the projectile.  The prongs were developed to impact the block before the projectile, so that the sabot would separate from the projectile. While the design provided the necessary function, it would be difficult to machine because it lacked axial symmetry and appeared to be weak at the interface between the front and back sections.

Pros: The sabot is deflected before the projectile enters the test section.  The prongs would provide less weight and more of a seam to peel back.

Cons: The interface from front to back is weak.  A highly ductile material could deform excessively during the test.  The design is difficult to machine.
