Project Objective

Classic tensile testing involves loading and unloading a specimen with a small strain rate to characterize elastic and plastic material properties.  Dynamic tensile testing increases the strain rate roughly 4 or more orders of magnitude higher than classic testing.  Under dynamic loading conditions the material properties are significantly different from their low rate counter-parts.  The Air Force is interested in developing a testing capability that can apply a dynamic tensile load to different materials to study the processes that occur in the material. Our team is to design the apparatus that will be used in the testing . The following components are to be designed:

1. The extruding device—main component to extrude the fired material

2. The sabot package-serves as a gas seal between the spherical projectile

3. A protection shield– covers the rear of the extrusion device to protect the surroundings

4. A soft catch mechanism-protects the specimen after it exits the extrusion device
