Group 2 - Radon Mitigation

Project Scope

FSU
FL DOH

Purpose:

Find a house in Leon County, Florida that contains high levels of radon.  Take an engineering approach to develop a unique radon mitigation system for the house and develop a new set a building codes standards for non-slab, raised houses.

Objectives:

-Find a house to perform Radon testing

-File of homes tested in Tallahassee since 01/01/04 with radon levels 4.0 pCi/L.

-Go to local high schools (AP Environmental Sciences, Physics, and Chemistry) to find a test base for possible high levels of radon.

-Provide students with testing equipment for testing the house

-Collect results of house tests and determine a candidate house

-Present a lecture on Radon  to 7 AP and Honors classes

-Conduct further tests in order to determine the severity of radon levels in candidate house.

-Do calculations in order to establish the best possible mitigation system.

-Order and buy parts

-Implement designed mitigation system into candidate house.

-Retest radon levels to confirm proper installation.

-Test and evaluate non-slab houses in order to expand on the Florida Building Code Standards.

-Find a house that sits on a slab, test and analyze its radon levels, and design a mitigation system.
