The Project
Project: VW Bug Electric Car Optimization
Faculty: Dr. Patrick Hollis
Budget: To be provided by Mr. Park
Liaison: Andrew Park
Project Background: The electric vehicle is a working/running vehicle. It needs to be optimized for power, top speed, and rebalancing weight for better handing and performance.
Primary Objectives:

Performance

  • Vehicle would be able to climb a 15 degree hill at 20 mph for more than 30 seconds
  • Attain a top speed of 70 mph
  • Have an ‘average’ range of 50 miles

Mechanical/Systems

  • Upgrading the 72V system to 96V or higher
  • Redistribution and placement of battery weight throughout the car
  • Reconfiguration of battery charger to a “smart” charger as provided by Rob Mattthies (http://www.buysellcommunity.com/sale/OEPHLHPD/)
  • Protection of electric components from environmental elements
  • Troubleshooting the headlight system
  • Rewire the charge cable to exit and feed through the existing gas fuel door
Secondary Objectives:
  • Solar panels charging system
  • Air conditioner unit installation
  • Ceramic heater unit installation
  • Fan system for the converter
  • Battery pack heating system
Design Objectives:
  • Configuration of instrumentation panel
  • Battery placement “cages” throughout car
