Sponsor Information

This project is sponsored by General Capacitor

General Capacitor is a clean-tech company founded 2011 in Tallahassee, FL that develops and manufactures lithium supercapacitors.

Personelle involved with the project
  • Harry Chen, the CTO of General Capacitor, is sponsoring and funding the project.
  • Dr. Jim P. Zheng, founder and chief scientest of General Capacitor, is our advisor.
    • Also being a professor in the electrical engineering department at Florida State University, he has provided much insight as to which method to use and how to make this project possible.
  • Dr. Chiang Shih, professor and Chair of the mechanical engineering department at Florida State university, is the academic sponsor for this project.

  • Vannesa Palomo
    • Bio: Vannesa Palomo is a senior of Mechanical Engineering at FSU/FAMU College of
Engineering located in Tallahassee, Florida.  She is co-leader of the prototype
machine for coating stabilized lithium metal powder project. Vannesa has minors in
mathematics, physics, and hospitality management. She also is fluent in four
languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian.
  • John Shaw
    • Bio: I am a Senior in the Mechanical Engineering Student at the FSU/FAMU College of Engineering. My title for this project is Co- Leader of Group #16. I am also the lead CAD designer for this project. In the past I have had a few internships over the summer. The first being a intern for a chemical insurance agency conducting loss control surveys. My other internship was working at FI-DE machine, as a intern working under a professional machinist.
  • Marcos Leon
    • Bio: I am a Senior Mechanical Engineering student at Florida State University with a focus on Mechanics and Materials. I serve as the treasurer of Group 16. I hold membership in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), allowing opportunities for networking. My plans are to graduate in May 2015 with my BS and then work in product development.
  • Benjamin Tinsley
    • Bio: I am a senior mechanical engineering student and Florida State University. My specialization track is magnet science, however my main interests lie in thermal fluid studies. I graduated from Gaither High School in 2011 in Tampa,FL. The same year I participated in a pre-engineering internship with the University of South Florida's biomedical engineering department. During the course of said internship, I developed and tested controls for a sailboat designed to enable a paraplegic to command the sailboat individually. I've had invitations to summer internships but unfortunately I've spent my two previous summers at school trying to graduate within four years.
  • John Magner
    • Bio: I am a senior at Florida State University pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with minors in Physics and Mathematics. I was born in Coral Springs, Florida and graduated from Palm Beach Central High School in 2011. Over previous summers I have worked as an Electrical Apprentice for Intercoastal Electric Inc. in Lake Worth, Florida working on commercial, residential, and industrial job sites. The summer of 2014 I interned with Duke Energy in Winter Garden, Florida. Here I worked in the Power Quality, Reliability, and Integrity department where I ran analysis on the power grid, created presentations for potential projects, and aimed to make the power grid a work efficient system.
  • Maria Sanchez
    • Bio: I am a Senior in the Electrical Engineering department at the FSU/FAMU College of Engineering. My title for this project is Electrical Engineering liaison for group #16. I have previously worked in academic research and published a paper on the wet chemistry and electrochemistry testing of palladium nanoparticles. I have had an internship in the power distribution and management for URS Corporation, contracted at Kennedy Space Center.
