Team 511 : Bearing Grinder Safeguard

Abstract

JTEKT, A bearing manufacturing company, has commissioned our capstone team to enhance the safety of their 1967 Besly Dual Disk grinder. The main concern addressed by the project is the risks of users unintentionally placing their fingers in pinch points and danger areas on the machine’s loading area. As such, implementing a new safety standard to protect the employee and minimize workplace injuries while also maintaining the machine’s output efficiency was our goal. Our solution for this plea was an emergency stop limit switch, which connects to the grinder's circuitry. This limit switch is  highly accessible and covers all pre-existing pinch points on the machine, providing a method of safely and quickly shutting the grinder off to any user.  Additionally, a steel sheet guard for the lower pinch point on the machine was implemented, which would prevent any user from being injured by it.
