EML 3016 C - Thermal Fluids II

Spring 2002

  • NEWS FLASH ( April 28, 2002):

  • This is the second of a two-part series of courses (Thermal Fluids I & II) designed to provide a background on the fundamental principles and engineering applications of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.  These three areas collectively make up the field of thermal sciences but are traditionally taught as separate courses.   However, in this course sequence, the three areas are presented in a more integrated manner, emphasizing the connectivity between these areas through the use of ‘real-world’ examples of thermal systems.   Topics covered include, but are not limited to: Fundamentals of Thermodynamics, including the First and Second Laws; application of the laws of Thermodynamics to various systems; analysis of various Power and Refrigeration Cycles; modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection and radiation; analysis of steady state and transient heat transfer; fluids statics; laws of conservation of mass & momentum (Newton’s second law) and their application to various systems; Bernoulli’s equation; losses in pipes and other internal and external flows.

The two thermal-fluids courses, EML 3015C (taught in Fall) and EML 3016C (taught in Spring), together with EML 4304L, Experiments in Thermal Fluid Sciences, form the core curriculum in thermal sciences.  Collectively, they should provide you with a sound fundamental as well as a practical knowledge of this area of engineering.
