| Course Objective: | Introduce mechanical engineering as a profession; inculcate the
role of cumulative learning, introduce engineering design and emphasize the
role of engineering science in design, teach the principles of statics in

| Grading: | Test 1 10% Best of Tests 2 to 7 50% Homework 10% Project 15% Final Exam 15% Please keep all the graded tests till the end of the semester in order to resolve any discrepancy that may arise. |

II Policies
| Attendance: | University policies for class attendance will be strictly adhered to. More than one unexcused absences will result in the reduction of 5 points each, from your final grade computation. An excuse for an absence can only be obtained from Professor N. Chandra directly. Also, official excuses should be turned in within a week of the last day of excuse. |
| Lecture Notes: | Lecture notes will be posted on the internet for each chapter at the appropriate time. There are no printed text books for the course; however, one is being prepared during the course. You can directly print the course material from the web as it is being posted. Homeworks, assignments and projects, and hand outs will also be posted directly on the web. |
| Tests: | Final exam is comprehensive and mandatory. It can either be take-home, in-class, or both. |
| Makeup: | If you must miss a test, please contact me in advance if possible. You can take the test ahead of the scheduled time but not after the test date. |
| Office Hours: | Please adhere to the specified office hours. However, if my office hours are not convenient to you, please feel free to make an appointment with me for a suitable time using email. |
| Incomplete: | No incomplete grade will be given except for extenuating circumstances. An incomplete grade will be given only if you are passing the course and an unforeseen event(s) hinders your completion of the course. Any supporting document and official excuses should have been turned in during the course of the semester and not towards the end of the semester. Simply stated, an excuse for January cannot be turned in towards the end of the semester. Any excuse(s) due to recurring illness should have been turned in beforehand in order to be considered for an incomplete. If an incomplete is granted, a contract concerning completion must be agreed to by the instructor and the student. |
