Dr. Chandra is a named Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Florida A & M University / Florida State University College of Engineering. He joined the College in 1986. He has over ten years of industrial experience in design and analysis of structural components, prior to his academic career. Superplasticity, composite materials, and computational mechanics are the areas which Dr. Chandra has published over 140 publications including 70 in archival journals and 4 books. He has supervised over 14 M.S. students and 7 Ph.D. students. Presently his research group consists of 2 Post Doctoral Research associates, 2 Ph.D. students and 2 M.S. student.

Dr. Chandra has attracted over $3.0 Million in research funding from aerospace industries and federal agencies. In addition, he is the first engineering school faculty member to receive the FSU Developing Scholar Award. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Florida. The Florida Engineering Society awarded him the Outstanding Engineering Professional Award in the year 1990. He is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is an associate editor of ASME Journal of Materials and Technology, the premier journal in the field,  Journal of Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures, and ASTM Journal of Engineering Materials and Performance, and in the editorial board of CMES: Computer Modeling in Engineering and Sciences. Recently (2005) he was awarded the Distinguished Research Professor by Florida State University, the title that stays with him throughout his career at FSU.

He is the director of the Advanced Mechanics and Materials Laborarory (AMML) and is a member of International Committee on Superplasticity.
