Class Objectives

Learn what it is to program. You will not become a real C++ programmer in these 4 weeks. But you should have some idea what programmers do, and what are the basic elements of languages such as C++ and Java.

After you are done with this class, it should also be easier to learn C++ by yourself from a book or by taking a dedicated class.

• Small: Assembly
• Medium: higher level languages: Fortran, Algol, Pascal, C, evolving into structured programming
• Large (100k lines): object-oriented programming

Important Facts

• Program roles are described elsewhere. Click here.
• The Recorder MUST do all typing, except logging into the captain's E-mail account.
• Programs must be E-mailed from the Captain's Unix account. If your program is named hello.cpp, use the Unix command:
  cat hello.cpp | mailx -s "Group xx's hello.cpp" dommelen recorder_email reflector_email
  All one line. Substitute the right Unix usernames for recorder_email and reflector_email Do not enter into mail or pine before doing mailx. Do NOT mail the executable (.exe) object (.o), makefile (.mak), etcetera. Before sending, examine the file first using:
  more hello.cpp.
• Do not use the tab key for tabbing, use spaces instead. Tabs do not show up correctly when mailed.
