Background

• Impinging Jet Flowfield occurs in Short Take-Off/Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft in close proximity to ground (hover mode).

• Potential problems encountered in STOVL aircraft due to jet impingement :
  • Lift Loss due to suck-down force on the aircraft
  • Sonic Fatigue of nearby structural components due to high acoustic loads
  • Hot Gas Ingestion and engine failure
  • Ground Erosion due to high speed wall jet

• Problems likely to become more severe for supersonic impinging jets
