Kurt Godel (1906-1978) contd
Godel was born in what is now Brno, Czech Republic, on April 28, 1906. He studied at the University of Vienna in Austria and received his doctorate in 1930. He remained on the faculty there, but during the 1930s he worked with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, N.J. Because of the developing war in Europe, he went to the United States in 1940 and remained there the rest of his life. From 1953 until 1976 he served as a professor at the institute.
Among his other mathematical endeavors was work on set theory. His book 'Consistency of the Axiom of Choice and of the Generalized Continuum-Hypothesis with the Axioms of Set Theory' (1940) has become a classic of modern mathematics. Godel died in Princeton on Jan. 14, 1978.
