Microscopic Strain Field Analysis (MSFA)
MSFA applied in an ESEM provides unique opportunities for analyzing in situ straining or heating experiments in insulating as well as conductive specimens.
Changes in specimen microstructure are measured, so local deformation can be correlated with different phases or defects.
Cross correlation can measure the displacement with an accuracy of 0.1-0.3 pixels.
1. Heat composite in ESEM, collect digital image. Cool and collect second image
2. Cross correlation to obtain local displacements.
3. Differentiate displacements
and plot as isostrain contours.
