Function Analysis

The overall function of the design should be expresses in terms of input and output.  This is the step where it as important to determine what needs to be achieved and how the goal is to be achieved.  This can be accomplished by representing the product as a black box which converts given inputs to desired outputs.  The overall function should be broken down into a set of sub-functions, who's interactions are shown in the black box.

The morphological chart illustrates several individual mechanisms that achieve each of the subtasks (functions) found in the black box.

 Example

The function of the vegetable collection and packaging system was broken down into six elements.  The functional analysis figure below shows how the functions of the vegetable packaging system will allow the design to complete the required task.
