• Yielding (Plastic flow) takes place when the greatest principal stress in a complex state of stress reaches the flow stress in a uniaxial tension.

• Since ?1 > ?2 > ?3, Flow occurs when

?0 (tension) = ?1

Compressive strength is usually greater than tensile strength.
