MECHANICAL METALLURGY

EMA 4225/5226, FALL  1998.

EMA 4225/5226, Mechanical Metallurgy (3).  Prerequisites/Corequisites: EGM 3520, EML 3011C and EML 3302L. Tensile Instability, Crystallography, Theory of Dislocations, Plasticity, Hardening Mechanisms, Fracture and Creep.

Goals:    This course is designed for advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate students interested in Materials Science, Metallurgy or related disciplines.  The course is essentially concerned with two areas of material mechanical behavior: Elastic and plastic deformation.  Special emphasis will be placed on the micromechanics of deformation and the structure of solids.

GRADING

Grading is at the discretion of the instructor and the TA.  The only reason to reconsider any grade assigned is if an unambiguous inconsistency exists.  The final grade is based on the following apportionment

                Attendance/Quizzes                                            10%

                Homework                                                             10%

                1 (2 for Grad. students) Reports                        10%

                1 Exam                                                                    35%

                Final Exam                                                             35%

GRADE POLICY

ATTENDANCE / QUIZZES   (10%)

Attendance is mandatory.  Written permission must be obtained from the Associate Dean in all cases of absence.

A closed book Quiz will be given at any time during the lecture.

Missed quizzes are given a grade of 0, and NO Makeup’s.

HOMEWORK 10%

Each homework assignment (problem set) is due at the beginning of the lecture on the due date; it must be handed in within the first ten minutes of class.

NO CREDIT will be given for late homework. (exceptions only for very rare and unusual circumstances).

Collaboration between students is allowed on problem sets; however, EACH STUDENT must hand in an ORIGINAL, COMPLETE, problem set.

DETAILS:

·         Homework is to be written on 8.5” x 11” paper-- ONE SIDE of the page only.

·         One problem per page.

·         Pages must be stapled together.

·         NOTE: If I can’t read it, I can’t grade it.

EXAM   (35%)

Only one (1) exam will be administered, this will account for count (35%) towards your final grade.  All exams are closed book and NO MAKEUP exams will be given.

FINAL EXAM  35%

A comprehensive final exam is scheduled during the finals week.

The final exam is closed book and NO MAKEUP exam will be given.
