Safety for Ethanol and n-Propanol


Ethanol and Propanol-Signs of Acute Exposure


Skin: Moderate skin irritation. May cause cyanosis of the extremities.

Eyes: Irritation, sensitization to light and corneal damage.

Inhalation: Headache and dizziness, possible coma in advanced stages.

Ingestion: Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, systemic toxicity with acidosis.


First-Aid Measures


Skin: Flush the skin with soap and water for 15 minutes while removing any contaminated clothing. Wash your clothes before wearing them again.

Eyes: Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention.

Inhalation: Seek fresh air and medical attention if symptoms continue.

Ingestion: Drink 2-4 cups of milk or water. Induce vomiting by Syrup of Ipecac.


Safety Aspects of the Storage of Ethanol and n-Propanol


*Store in a tightly closed container

*Keep away from oxidizing materials

*Do not store near perchlorates, peroxides, chromic or nitric acid
