Aluminum Alloy 1100 Configurations
The current Cummins QSX15 diesel engine oil cooler consists of nine oil channels and eight coolant channels (9-8). As we have mentioned before, our design packages involve varying oil/coolant channel configurations. The first number corresponds to the number of oil channels and the second number corresponds to the number of coolant channels. After varying the size and the number of oil/coolant channels in the different configurations, we thought of another idea to enhance the heat transfer. This idea was to put the oil flow in series instead of parallel. The current configuration is 9-8 and the oil flow is parallel. By parallel, we mean that the oil coming into the oil cooler is split between two oil coolers. The idea of oil flow in series would mean the entire oil flow will pass through both oil coolers. The series flow will also increase the oil's velocity through the oil coolers and therefore increase the convection coefficient.
The following are the different design configurations for the material aluminum alloy 1100 in series and parallel flow.
