Types of Compressors
Axial Compressors
Fluid flow is parallel to axis of rotation
Used in modern aircraft
Have several stages to increase compression pressure ratio
Used in modern gas turbine engines
Advantages | Disadvantages |
High peak efficiency. | High weight |
Small frontal area forgiven airflow | High manufacturing costs |
Multistage allows for increase in CPR |
High starting power requirements |
Centrifugal Compressor
Fluid flow is perpendicular to the axis of rotation
Used in first jet turbine engines
Advantages Disadvantages Larger CPR per stage
Cannot be used in stages Simple and rugged Shorter in length
