Below you will find a brief description of the games on the Novell Server. To the best of my knowledge these games and learning tools are not available for purchase by the general public.

Accelerated Reader - This is a reading based program. Children read a book then they take a test on that book to earn points. An assembly is held every month and certificates are given to the children that have earned them.

Bailey's Book House - This is a kindergarten program aimed at helping the children with early reading skills. There are many areas to this game. Some are, matching the rhyming words, learning the meanings of under, between, above, on top, etc.

Base Ten - This program teaches children groupings of one's, ten's, and hundred's.

Clock Works - This program helps children learn to tell time with standard numbers and with Roman numerals.

Counters and Sums - This is a math based learning tool. Children learn to add and subtract numbers. They also learn trading.

Fractions Practice Unit - Another math based learning tool aimed at the upper elementary level. Here children learn mixed fractions, equal and unequal fractions. Also, how to change a fraction to a whole number equivalent.

Kid's Pix - This is a kid friendly paint program, full of fun sound and paint effects. The children can create moving pictures and slide shows using this program.

Millie's Math House  - This is a kindergarten program designed to introduce the children to the early math concepts.

Money Works - Is used in grades one and two. This program helps to sort money by bills and change. It also helps to identify coins and bills. There is also the change maker, where children have to give back change from a certain amount spent and what they are given.

My Own Stories - This is a story based game. Children are able to create scenes with in the graphics of this program and then add text to tell a story about the scene they created. It allows for several pages of pictures and text, giving the creator a feeling of making his or her own book.

Number Munchers - Another math based program. This game is used by 3,4, and 5th graders. We mainly use the Multiples portion of the game. Similar to Pac-man, children Munch the answers of "What is the multiple of 2?" on up to the multiple of 12's

Patterns & Blocks - A geometry based program aimed at 1st and 2nd graders. Children need to fit in shapes in same shaped blocks, also find the missing shape to complete a pattern. The fourth level of this game has somewhat complex patterns with a few shapes missing and the children are required to fill in the missing shapes to complete the pattern that exists on the other side.

Sammy's Science - This is a kindergarten based program. It introduces children to science at a kindergarten level. Some of the things that can be done in this game are, sorting animals in to appropriate categories, learning about weather, building things, and sorting pictures by 1st, middle, and last, to make a movie.

Storybook Weaver - Another story based game. Very similar to My Own Stories.

Student Writing Center - This is a child based word processing program. Children can create a text document, a sign, a card, a report, a journal, and even a banner.

Super Muncher - Similar to number muncher. This program has different categories, such as animals, famous Americans, food & health, Geography, Music, Odds n' Ends, and challenge which is all of the categories in one game.

Type to Learn - Is a keyboard learning tool, which is started in grade one, usually towards the middle of the year.

Word Muncher - Again is similar to the super and number muncher games. With word muncher, the child is to munch the words that have the same vowel sound as the word they are given on the top of their screen, earning points with every correct word munched. This game can be tailored to the appropriate grade level.

The following are hyper-links for web-pages that we love to use here in the Lab. Just click on the blue letters and that will take you to the page that is listed. If your not sure just ask your kid!

FOR YOUR INFORMATION HERE ARE SOME WEB SITES THAT I HAVE FOUND TO BE BOTH FUN AND EDUCATIONAL:

FunBrain.com is one of my favorite sites. It offers games for grades K-8. The areas they cover are math, language arts, the universe, culture, and many others. The games have several different levels, starting with easy on up to super brain. They have a quiz lab for teachers to use. In this lab you can make your own quiz, or chose to import the many quizzes made by other teachers.

This is a wonderful site for kids from K-3. It is divided into eight main centers designed to educate and entertain. The Brain Train-is full of games to play, from geometric figures, spatial relations and time concepts. Music Mania-lets kids play different musical instruments, record their melodies, and listen to their creations. Storyville-lets kids take part in interactive stories that deal in a fun way with issues that are relevant to their lives. Create-lets kids design their own drawings. Clubhouse-here kids can send animated greeting cards to their friends, take on-line surveys, and design their own homepages. Surprises-kids can return here for daily jokes and riddles, or visit their adopted pet and watch it grow. Arcade-This has nine categories of fun games, purely for fun. Cool Sites-Has many different links to games on other Internet sites.

http://www.alfy.com/

This is a site that has a game of logic. It has 9 different games. You must move a series of cars out of the way, to get another car out.

http://www.sprocketworks.com/

Another very good site for most elementary aged children. This page has both educational games, and games of pure fun. The Space Cave and Search for the Golden Egg are two very good games for 3rd and 4th grade students.

This web page is full of links for all different math games. It will cover all grades, from 1-5.

They give you a brief explanation of the game, so you are able to make a decision on which game would be appropriate to play.

Here you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about the White House and its history. Also, information about the President and his recent trips and activities.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/

With this site, you can find a large amount of math word problems for grades 1 – 7. However, they are not interactive. You can print them for use in the classroom, but they cannot be played on-line. Therefore, I will not use this site in the computer lab. You may find in useful in your classroom.

http://www.mathstories.com/

This site has four different places to explore. They are (1)Around The World, which has 3 links. Voice to the World, where kids can e-mail their chose of several pre-written messages to World Leaders. Neat Links has many different places to visit, from fun and games to crafts. The category with the most links would be I didn't know that, where they have pages with information from Mars to fish and a few others things in between.(2) Make New Friends, is where kids can send electronic cards, live chat with kids around the world, or find a cyper-pen pal.(3) Kids Talk About, has 5 areas to chose from. What do you think, lets kids take part in a weekly poll. Write Me a Story, gives you the basics of a story and lets you use your imagination with the rest. Kids Kash Questions, where kids can answer a daily question to earn points. Pet Area, is where kids can tell the world about their dog, cat or any other pet. Just Joking Around, is for daily jokes and giggles.(4) Just for fun, is where you'll find The Game Area it has some on-line games like Maze-Madness, Animals of the World, and Concentration, to name a few. Skeeter’s Music Machine, lets you make your own music, record it and play it back.

This is just a sampling of what I have found on the Internet that can be used in the Computer Lab. I thought you might like to take a look at the sites, to see for yourself the games you might want to use for your children. I am always looking for new sites to use, if you have found one that would be fun and educational for grade school kids, please let me know. I can also put this notice on a disk that would have the sites linked, so that all you would have to do is click on the web address and it would take you to the site. If you would like me to do this for you, bring me a disk, and I would be more than happy to transfer it for you.

Hope this is of some help to you.
