Syllabus

  1. Introduction: Concrete and reinforced concrete, codes, service and ultimate loads, the ACI design process. (1 week)
  2. Materials: Concrete, mechanical properties of concrete, reinforcing steel, mechanical properties of reinforcing steel. (1 week)
  3. Beam Design for Flexure: The uncracked section, cracking moment, flexural strength, balanced failure, strength design and analysis, doubly reinforced beams, T-Beams, temperature and shrinkage steel, one-way slabs. (6 weeks)
  4. Serviceability: Deflection, crack control. (1.5 weeks)
  5. Shear and Diagonal Tension: Shear failure in reinforced concrete beams, design procedures for shear, design of shear reinforcement, shear friction. (2 weeks)
  6. Bond and Anchorage: Bond stresses, development length of tension steel, standard hooks, cutoff points and anchorage. (2 weeks)
  7. Columns: Fundamentals of column behavior, beam-columns, short column strength, long columns, interaction diagrams. (2.5 weeks)
  8. Oral presentation of term project. (0.5 weeks)
