Building a Model in WSPRO

Select the WSPRO river reach icon.

Choose "New Simulation" from the WSPRO pull down menu.

When prompted "clear all WSPRO data?" Click "OK"

Select, "Show Plot Window" & Select, "Show River Window" from the Display pull down menu.

Once the Plot and river windows are open, pull the bottom of the plot window down so that it covers the gray area.

Next, select the "create cross section icon".

Click anywhere in the "River Sections" window and WSPRO will automatically create your cross section. The default Cross-section is trapezoidal.

*The last two steps can be repeated to create as many cross-sections as needed.

Manipulating cross-section Geometry

Each data point that makes up the cross-section geometry can be edited by double clicking on the cross-section icon to bring up the "Section Editor" and selecting the "list" button.

Defining channel materials

Once all channel geometry has been defined, a material must be defined for the channel embankment and bottom. In order to do this material properties must first be created.

Click on the Icon to switch SMS to mesh module

Choose "Material Properties" from the RMA2 Pull down

Menu

The Materials Editor will then pop up. From the materials editor select the "General Material Properties" button. Choose "NEW" to create a new material. Name it BANK, and change its ID # TO 5. Select the "Close" button.

Repeat the last step to create another material called Center Channel with an ID # 6.

The nning's N values can now be edited for each material created. For the center channel

n = 0.025

For the bank n = 0.033

Once the nning's N values have been changed, close the material editor and return back to the river module.

ASSIGNING MATERIALS TO CHANNEL

Double click on the cross section icon to bring up the cross section editor.

A section break must be created before we can assign a material to the section.

To create a section break, click on the section break icon.

Next click close to the point where you want the section break to occur. You can adjust the exact position later with the section break editor.

Use the X-position editor to get the section break directly on the geometry point.

Now that the section breaks are all in place click on the "FRAME" button. You will now use the "select section" button to assign material properties.

Click the "Select Section" button.

Click in the bank area of the cross-section.

Click the "<no material>" button and assign the material titled "bank" to this section.

Repeat these steps to assign material to the Center channel and the other bank.

** The section breaks and material assignments must be completed for each cross section.

RUNNING THE MODEL

In order to run the model, run controls must be assigned and the exit cross section must be specified.

Select the "attributes" button and change the cross section name from XS to EXIT for the bottom cross section.

From the WSPRO pull down menu select "WSPRO Run Control".

On the Run Control palette select the "EXIT" cross section and use the arrow to send it to the "flow sets" column.

Next click the "Add" button

Now for the "EXIT" cross section, define a

Q = 5000 and initial WSE = 7

Water surface elevation (WSE).

Make sure that "subcritical" is selected.

Click "OK"

From the WSPRO pull down menu select "Save Simulation".

After saving the simulation select " Run WSPRO"

DISPLAYING RESULTS

From the WSPRO pull down menu select "Display Options…"

From the Display Options palette select "Import"

Import the file that is the same name that you saved but has the suffix ".PLT"

Select "OK" and view your water surface profile.
