Catalog Description

Students must have senior standing; completed all basic core, and proficiency courses; and have approval of their advisor as well as permission of the instructor. A capstone senior-level design course integrating the knowledge gained in undergraduate studies. Completion of a team-based design project covering several sub-discipline in civil and environmental engineering. Industry and professional participation.
 

Prerequisites

(a)    senior standing as applied to a civil or environmental engineering major

(b)   completed all mathematics and basic engineering science courses

(c)    completed all pertinent science core courses

(d)   completed all science and design proficiency courses related to the topic of the project chosen, and

(e)    approval of the student’s advisor or permission of the instructor of senior design to enroll in the course
 

Textbook

There is no textbook for this course because the emphasis is on design project. However, students may need to purchase copies of papers and articles occasionally to satisfy their needs of acquiring certain analysis and design concepts. Upon availability, some of the needed materials or work examples may be provided by the coordinator, industry or faculty contact.

Course Objectives, Educational Outcomes

The goal of the course is to provide graduating seniors with a real life design experience that is structured to represent actual projects and requires that student team organize to utilize their collective training and experience in solution of design tasks. Emphasis is placed on creative problem solving, computer usage, documentation, communication, teaming skills, project management, ethics and design skills.  

Course Outcomes                                                                                                                                                   

1. To synthesize knowledge gained in previous design      1a, 3e, 6f
courses in to an integrated design experience  

2. To undertake real life design projects sponsored by the              5c, 6f, 10b    industry, and carried out with professional mentoring  

3. To work on inter- and multi-disciplinary capstone projects          2c, 3c, 4c    in a group environment, together with industry and faculty
guidance  

4. To gain and apply skills in technical writing, oral                 6b, 7c, 10b, 11c    presentation, report preparation, activity reporting,
progress reporting, computer and schedule maintenance,
and design drawing preparation  

5. To tackle ethical and open-ended engineering design issues      5a, 6c, 9b
 

Student Learning Tasks as related to the course outcomes

1. Weekly activity reports on group, industry and faculty interaction, final written   report, oral  presentations

2. Weekly activity reports, interim progress reports

3. Final report, interim progress report, field trips, guest lectures

4. Oral presentations, final and interim reports, weekly activity reports

5. Final report, oral presentations.
                                  

Course Assessment

To achieve the course objectives/departmental outcomes, the course will be assessed using the following:

  1. Student performance in weekly activity reports, proposal document, interim progress report, final report and oral presentations.
  2. Written questionnaires during the semester and at the end of the term

Professional Component of the Course

The course will teach senior level civil and environmental engineering students how to execute a real life design project involving several sub areas of the profession from the very inception to finalization. Professional industry mentoring is required and implemented.
