In Clause 4.2.2, the ISO 14001 standard requires an organization to have some way to keep track of legal and other requirements that apply to the environmental aspects of its activities, products and services. This includes requirements specific to the activity, such as operating permit or license, and those related to the organization's products of services, such as specific regulations or general environmental laws. The annex to ISO 14001 points out that "other requirements" can include industry codes of practice, non-regulatory guidelines, and agreements with public authorities (such as consent decrees). It can also include internal requirements that the organization has developed, such as supplier and contractor requirements and pollution prevention programs.

Note that the requirement is to "have access to" requirements. The assumption is that the organization need not actually maintain all requirements on-site, or at every plant, but to be able to access them when necessary by those who need the information. An electronic or computer network could suffice.
