The organization must maintain appropriate records to demonstrate conformance to the requirements of the standard. This means developing procedures for identifying, maintaining, and disposing of environmental records. According to ISO 14001, Clause 4.4.3, environmental records include "training records and the results of audits and reviews." Records are evidences of the ongoing operation of the EMS. Records can include, in addition to the above:

  • Legislative and regulatory requirements
  • Inspection, maintenance. and calibration records
  • Incident reports
  • Reports of environmental audits and reviews
  • Contractor and Supplier information
  • Emergency response records

Any potential EMS manager should be aware of the vast amount and complex range of information that an EMS can produce. A good EMS will more than likely have a good information management system in place.
