Heating System
The heating system used in the fuel cell test system will center on the VF-180-3-12 Semi-Cylindrical Heater manufactured by Thermcraft, Inc. The heater will cost $207 and power will be supplied using a standard (120 V) outlet and a variable voltage transformer (Variac). The dimensions of the heater are as follows: the outside diameter is 5”, the inside diameter is 3”, and it is 12” long. It dissipates 850W over a surface area of 0.036 m2 yielding a surface heat flux of 23300 W/m2. The temperature inside the system will be monitored by Type K thermocouples embedded within each fuel cell subassembly. If the temperatures exceed the operating range of the system, the power input will be manually adjusted to compensate.
