Objective

A very important discovery regarding the oxidation of methane gas was made when bacteria that can be found in compost (yard waste), were observed to feed themselves on the gas.  By taking this discovery into consideration, a Bio-filter can be developed to reduce the emissions.  Below is a detailed design of the overall theme.

There are three basic objectives in the project.

1.)   The first objective is to investigate alternative designs for passive bio-filters that use

methane-oxidizing bacteria to reduce emissions of CH4 from passive vents.

2.)  The second objective is to recommend performance-based designs for large-scale bio-filters.

3.)  The third objective is to produce an actual prototype of the filter and test it for efficiency.
