Principal stresses/Invariants
In many real situations, some of the components of the stress tensor (Eqn. 4-1) are zero.
For most stress state there is one set of coordinate axes (1, 2, 3) along which the shear stresses vanish. The normal stresses, ?1, ?2, and ?3 along these axes are principal stresses.
