PROJECT TITLE: Can 1,4-Dioxane Permeate through Landfill Bottom Liners to Contaminate Groundwater?

Project Sponsor: Hinkley Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management

Project Duration: Oct. 01, 2026 - Sept. 30, 2027

Project Overview

1,4-Dioxane contamination and remediation in Florida groundwater and drinking-water has received much media coverage and public attention in recent years. Common questions to many stakeholders are: What are the sources of 1,4-dioxane contamination? Is landfilling one of the sources? This project will provide technical data that will be helpful for finding the answers. We will determine the permeability of 1,4-dioxane through a commonly used landfill liner consisting of a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane and a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL).

  • Task 1: 1,4-Dioxane permeation experiments at a selected range of concentrations

  • Task 2: 1,4-Dioxane permeation experiments at a selected range of temperatures

  • Task 3: 1,4-Dioxane permeation modeling at other concentrations and temperatures

  • Task 4: Evaluation against real leachate permeation experiments and recommendations
