Materials

 

In our lab one may come across n-heptane and ethanol.  They are listed below with their relevant information that was obtained from Material Safety Data Sheets. 

 

N-HEPTANE

           

CAS Number:  142-82-5

Molecular Formula:  C7H16

 

Synonyms: 

heptane, dipropyl methane, and heptyl hydride

 

Physical Properties: 

Colorless liquid with a melting point of –91 °C and a boiling point of

98 °C.  This chemical is highly flammable with an autoignition temperature of 222 °C.

 

Skin:

Mild irritation, redness and pain.

 

Eyes: 

Irritation.  Splashes may produce redness and pain.

 

Inhalation: 

Irritation of respiratory tract.  Aspiration into lungs can produce severe

lung damage.

 

Ingestion: 

Nausea and abdominal pain.

 

First Aid Measures:

Skin:  Wash skin with soap and water for at least 15 minutes while

           removing contaminated clothing.

Eyes:  Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes while lifting the

           upper and lower eye lids periodically.  Seek medical attention!

Ingestion:  Aspiration hazard.  DO NOT induce vomiting.  Seek

           medical attention!

 

ETHANOL

           

CAS Number:  64-17-5

Molecular Formula:  C2H5OH

 

Synonyms: 

Ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, fermentation alcohol, and absolute  

alcohol.

 

Physical Properties: 

Colorless liquid with a melting point of –130 °C and a boiling point of

78 °C.  This chemical has an autoignition temperature of 683 °F.  Avoid any oxidizing agents.  Store in a tightly closed container.

 

Skin:

Mild irritation, redness and pain.

 

Eyes: 

Irritation.  Splashes may produce redness and pain.

 

Inhalation: 

Irritation of respiratory tract.  Aspiration into lungs can produce severe
